Dear GMA SHRM Members,

I am honored to assume my new role as President of the Greater Madison Area SHRM Chapter. Representing over 850 human resources professionals, we are one of the strongest, most active chapters in the state.

Our main principle is to provide meaningful programs, seminars and resources for all of our members and guests. In the current economy there is a tremendous focus on providing local programs to help you develop your career and also to offer networking opportunities to help build professional relationships. I invite you to attend one of our monthly meetings to get connected with great human resources professionals in the Madison area. We thank you, our members for all of your contributions to the chapter. We appreciate you attending our programs and spreading the word about the resources we have available. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the WI SHRM State Conference located in the Wisconsin Dells, October 14-16 th!

This chapter is able to boast these wonderful opportunities because of our strong Board of Directors and wonderful volunteers. I would like to personally thank Cassy Van Dyke who has served our chapter as President over this last year as well as Anthony Dix who will be stepping off the Board of Directors after serving 5 years. We are so grateful for the contributions you have made to our chapter!

Bizarre Laws

Did you know. . . According to WI State Statute 97.18(3)d-(4), "The serving of colored oleomargarine or margarine at a public eating place as a substitute for table butter is prohibited unless it is ordered by the customer?” In addition, "each part of the contents of the package [must be] contained in a wrapper or separate container which bears the word "oleomargarine" or "margarine" in type or lettering not smaller than 20-point type." Next time, ask your server if it's butter or margarine. . .

Legislative Update

 Spurred by the fall 2008 general election and the continuing economic crisis, Congress has passed a number of major laws that affect employee health and welfare benefit plans. The Obama administration established a White House office of Health Care Reform and is actively pursuing a variety of reforms. The attached document is a summary of the major recent federal legislative changes affecting employer health and welfare plans.

2009 GMA SHRM Compensation Survey

Last year GMA SHRM partnered with enetrix, a Gallup Company, to provide premier on-line surveys.  The 2008 GMA SHRM Compensation Survey is a comprehensive on-line survey that has the flexibility to produce reports based on revenue size, industry, type of ownership, and number of FTE’s.  The 2008 GMA SHRM Compensation Survey had over 100 companies of all sizes in the greater Madison area that provided salary information for more than 200 benchmarked jobs.  Our hope this year is to increase the number of participants.   Participating members receive a significant discount on the cost of the survey!

If you would like to participate, please go to http://gmashrm.enetrix.com.  Select “Click Here to Register” on the right to create an individual and company profile and create your username and password. If an individual from your company has already registered for an account, they will need to grant you permission to enter and review data for your company. Select “Participation” and follow the steps to enter your survey data.

Wisconsin SHRM Workplace Diversity Award

What is the Workplace Diversity Award and why is it offered?

To recognize those organizations and/or companies who foster an inclusive work environment in which all employees are inspired to contribute their best through their different perspectives, backgrounds and experiences. Award an organization who has been a role model in their local community as a strong advocate for diversity. This award will be based on organizational achievements. The Workplace Diversity Award is presented to the recipient at our WI State SHRM Conference that is being held October 14 th – 16 th in Wisconsin Dells.

Who is eligible?

Organization/company nominated for this award should:

  • Have displayed diversity in their local community.
  • Be a role model for others in their advocacy of diversity.
  • Have demonstrated leadership in championing the cause of racial, cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and other aspects of diversity within the human resources profession and community.
  • Be an organization, company or division of an organization/company that is based in the State of Wisconsin.

Developing your talent pipeline today will enable you to be more successful tomorrow; sounds easy right?  Well as you may know it’s not that simple. Many businesses have felt the pressures from the economy which has forced businesses to revise their strategies and make decisions on their talent. Other businesses have faced challenges of an aging workforce and face the threat of losing a portion of their knowledge and skill base. The July GMA SHRM Summit will give you the opportunity to hear from two different sources of information regarding best practices and strategies you can use to support your talent management challenges.

The Tradition Continues! The first two years were such a great successes that we are back again! Join us as we host our Third Annual Golf Outing at the Meadows of Sixmile Creek on Tuesday, August 4th. Proceeds will benefit Domestic Abuse Intervention Services.

Volunteer Opportunity

The Workforce Readiness committee will be doing a workshop on July 21st, from 10am - 12pm for the Division of Continuing Education, Adult & Student Services on the UW Campus.

This is a group of unemployed professionals ranging in age from about 25 to 60. They come from a variety of fields. Below are a few topics they’d like us to touch on.

  • how to get an interview (how to stand out from the other 300 people who are applying)
  • thoughts on finding leads to apply for
  • resume tips/cover letter tips
  • dealing with phone interviews
  • how to follow up resume submission and interviews

HR InTouch Guidelines

Article Writing:

Do you have an interest in writing for the HR InTouch? We have an interest in learning more about your area of expertise!

Why should you volunteer? Top three reasons: 1) to share your knowledge and experiences to educate others; 2) to become more connected in the HR and Dane County communities; and 3) to contribute towards the advancement of GMA SHRM and the HR profession.

The first step is for you to choose a submission option: you can pre-submit an article to GMA SHRM at any time for us to use in any of the upcoming newsletters, you can sign up to write for a particular month, or we can put you on a list of people to contact in future months whenever we need articles.

Article length:

Because the HR InTouch is now in an online format, the size is flexible. The article should be engaging and hold readers’ attention. Include the core information in your article, and we will advise if it is too lengthy.

Solicitation:

GMA SHRM is conscious not to allow solicitation through the articles, in an effort to protect the interests of our partners and members. The nature of the article should be educational (i.e., what are the business advantages of having a product like yours) or informational. Otherwise, if you truly are interested in advertising through the HR InTouch, you can work with our Marketing Committee. As a rule of thumb for article writing, if the submission relates to a for-profit event, or specifically markets your company (vs. your industry), it is an advertisement, and should be purchased. If it is a not-for-profit event that your company is hosting, or an announcement (i.e., a SHRM member recently joined your company), it is an acceptable addition to the HR InTouch content. If you have any questions related to the appropriateness of your submission, please contact us.
