Volunteer role: Our food pantry is rather like a grocery store: our clients make their own food choices from the food we have. This is not only more respectful of them, but it also helps prevent good food from going unused or getting wasted.

We assign clients points to spend at our pantry based on the number and ages of people in their households. Each client is "hosted" by a volunteer who guides him or her and the grocery cart around the pantry and keeps track of the points being spent. Because each client needs a host, we need many hosts to keep our clients from long waits!

During your shift, you will help many individuals from a wide variety of circumstances, one at a time.

On Friday we could use a small group of four to host clients though the pantry.

Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin

Day & time: Friday from 9:00am - 12:00pm or 12:00pm - 3:00pm or 4:00pm - 7:00pm

Location:

Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin

2802 Dairy Drive

Madison, WI 53718

Volunteer roles:

Our largest program is the distribution of food from our warehouse to over 400 nonprofit member agencies that offer programs to provide food to those in need. Food is distributed to programs such as food pantries, meal sites, shelters and after-school programs. Volunteer projects include:

*             Sorting and inspecting food and other items

*             Re-bagging or re-packaging food

*             Inspecting and labeling items

The River Food Pantry

Day & time: Friday 1:00pm - 4:00pm or 5:00pm - 8:00pm

Volunteers should arrive 1/2 before the pantry session starts for brief training and job assignments

Location:

The River Food Pantry
2201 Darwin Rd

Madison, WI 53704

Heading North on Packers Ave., turn right on Darwin Rd. The pantry is the 1st warehouse on the right hand side, behind the Valvoline oil change.

Volunteer role: We are usually quite busy with 450+ households each week. Now that we are the busiest food pantry in Dane County, we needs lots of help. On Friday we cook a meal from scratch for 300 people.  We would need 2 - 4 cooks from 1 to 4 PM.   On Friday night we need 25+ volunteers to from 5 to 8 PM.  They would help with the food pantry, serve a meal, free clothing area and children’s area.
